Ambient Symphonies in the Cyberpunk Era, by Elastic Colors

a0537560440_10

Inspired by retro sci-fi soundtracks and the 80’s vision of cyberpunk culture, Elastic Colors has crafted a magnificent conceptual album “Ambient Symphonies in the Cyberpunk Era”. Released by Tokyo based label I Low You Records, it’s a bold and thick 14-track project – steeped in warm synths and fuzzy atmospherics.

After listening for a few tracks, it becomes apparent that something special is happening here. Of course all the melodies are sitting where they should, with very addicting riffs sparking up here and there, but it’s something churning under the surface that is triggering some nostalgiagasms.

Upon further inspection my suspicions were confirmed – as the producer utilized a unique technique of recording the entire album onto VHS tape before being mastered for release! The result is an incredibly warm and analogue experience, even when streaming the tracks through my browser I could feel the tape unwinding as the music played…

Some of my favorite tracks are the more ethereal and atmospheric ones – such as “Higher” – with the disjointed percussion and wandering synths, it sets an uneasy scene that’s only amplified with the detuned warped chords sweeping around you. It’s a wonderful and impressive marriage of sound design and post-vaporwave concepts.

Technically the album released October 10th, but you can download and stream the entire project via bandcamp right now! I hope this is a hit that perhaps a physical release will be incoming, but for now a digital edition is more than enough. Great for fans of soundtrack music, Emerald Web, Windham Hill or John Carpenter.

No Ordinary Home, by James Murray

james-murray-no-ordinary-home-1048x1048

Headphone Commute is one of my favorite places to discover interesting new ambient music – much to my delight they have a new featured mix highlighting minimal sound label Home Normal to commemorate their 10th anniversary. Quite the achievement indeed, and worthy of celebration – much like the mix, which is packed full of blissful atmospheric soundscapes, masterfully curated for optimal relaxation and immersion.

Serenity in the Vast Darkness, by Lucid Sound Driver

a2167962446_10

Beautiful melodic and textural ambient by Lucid Sound Driver (an incredibly appropriate moniker), presented in a variety of formats by Æscape Sounds.

Lush new age with a thick atmosphere, dense with emotion and nostalgia. My favorite type of ambient, really – the kind that can set the mood comfortably in the background, or deeply appreciated when more attention is payed. The 6 tracks, though not brief by any means, left me wanting more as the phased synthesizers guided me towards the light beyond the darkness.

The 3-part opening trilogy of tracks are quite strong – even going so far as to destroy one of my biggest bothers in music – the inclusion of police/ambulance sirens, turning it into something quite atmospherically beautiful. There’s even a Sangam feature on this record, but interestingly enough I found that to be the weakest track of the project – feeling almost uninspired and lacking the polish of the rest of the record. It’s still a good track, perhaps I got my hopes up a little too high!

I do adore the generous use of field recordings around this record – gentle breeze, dripping rain and passing vehicles. At times it can be triumphant, while taking mysterious brooding turns towards angst and grief. A story is surely being told, but you can put the pieces together yourself.

You can get the record now Digitally at name-your-own price – or if you choose to support, you can get a Cassette Tape, a CD or Vinyl (all of which are still in stock at the time of this posting) – or even get a beautiful looking poster for only a couple dollars!

Iniciação by Nacional Erudita

a2042467000_10

Deliciously lush and atmospheric new noise from Brazilian artist Nacional Erudita, brought to us by Infinite Sync Studios.

This Side A/Side B of sorts is warm and inviting. Tape sounds being utilized heavily to the point I felt as if I were in a duplication or processing facility – and I loved it. The therapeutic nature of the fuzzy analogue drones does well to build an atmosphere in less than 20 minutes of sonic storytelling. Ominous howls and scraping percussion dominate the first track, like some strange ceremony being dragged-along a few rooms down the hall. Track two is pure dense tape magic, packed with complex and satisfying subtleties.

Available digital only it seems! Head over to the bandcamp page to support! 🌿

Healers Paradise, by Healers co.

a3569538589_10

Really enjoying this psychedelic experimental work from Healers co. – Healers Paradise is an inspired flourish of raw creativity. The project takes on many media forms – Digital Audio Album, Cassette Tape and Visual Album cover the spectrum of senses from sound to sight to touch, allowing Healers co. to explore some thick and satisfying world-building.

The style meanders somewhere between desert dwelling peyote psychedelics and some sort of rooftop drone experiments acting as a cyberpunk prayer to future gods. A fantastic balance of electric noodlings and acoustic sounds. Pick up a Tape, or enjoy however you wish…

Dark Bandwidth, by Diskette Park

a3157141151_10

Diskette Park returns with a premium collection of late-night slushwave Dark Bandwidth. This tight 8-track project is packed with super lush long playing tracks with proper grooves that don’t let you go! In typical Diskette Park style, the chopping and riffs featured are absolutely hypnotic and addicting, easily making this one a double playthrough candidate.

Diskette Park has recently dealt with a natural disaster of sorts and has seem some equipment fried! This is a great time to support the artist and throw some coffee money into that bandcamp pay-what-you-want box…

Introduction to Docetism: Trees & Saints

a2519903123_10

There seems to be a churning energy happening all over the underground music scene currently, and in an interesting way it all seems to be tied into impressively large projects! Here we have presented by polish Ambient/Dub label Nichts 2-20 track collections of Docetism tracks from the past 7 years. DAUNTING?! A little bit, but it’s equally as delicious and delightful.

Docetism – who has released projects across some of my favorite labels in the past (Silent Season, Rohs! Records) is no stranger to the dub techno scene, boasting a sprawling catalog of full lengths, EP’s and singles. It’s no wonder long time label partner Nichts would aim to give listeners a crash course per-say. As stated on the releases bandcamp page, for a new listener it’s “A good place to start”.

The sounds themselves are pure dub-techno bliss. Docetism presents a distinct voice and flavor however, often utilizing much more movement in chords and progressions than others working in the genre. Raw musicality blends perfectly with the subtle palette of sounds and instrumentation, especially on tracks like Hedera Helix [Golden Bough] or Requiem [Armenia].

Tracks leap in and out of textural ambient and modern classical ideas, all very much welcome in context, eventually leading the listener back to a healthy groove. Out of the two collections I would say I have listened to “Trees” more, but there is plenty of quality to be found in both albums. The kicker? Nichts is offering these both at name-your-own-price, so if you want a nice place to start your dub-techno collection look no futher!

NOVAGREENHOUSE by SIMULAMEMOREX® n.93

a3711059640_10

BOGUS//Collective recently released this gem NOVAGREENHOUSE, a delicious long-form mallsoft ambient project with hints of vapor bliss. Over 20 minutes of sprawling sound, you can HEAR nature growing around you as time slows down. Healthy plunderphonics here with a plethora of subtle soundscapes being built around harmonious bird chirps and muzak playing through tiny distant speakers. It’s a lush and rich atmosphere that leaves me feeling totally immersed. I really REALLY hope this one sees a cassette release one way or another…
