Lion Cuts, by CDX

a3399466384_10

Impressive in scale and bold in execution, Lion Cuts is the latest full-length by multifaceted producer Tim Thornton (CDX, Tiger Village), brought to us by Doom Trip Records out of LA. Tight and diverse, like an expertly curated charcuterie platter, and it’s equally delicious!

CDX reaches into the massive pool of electronic history, swirling it around and emerging with an inspired and unique collection of tracks. At any moment you could pinpoint genres being mashed and merged – acid bass churning over chillhop beats, all mingling with massive synthwave atmospheres. Have no fear of over-complexity or pretentious un-listenability – Lion Cuts manages to be pleasantly easy to digest from start to finish. Even as CDX peppers in dissonance and experiments in structure and noise, it all serves to a larger experience of bubbly energy and sonic excitement.

Twenty Two II is one of my favorites, easily getting stuck in my head for hours at a time. Rose Gold Relationship Goals is another that really stays with me, the groove is so satisfying I want to hit repeat and keep the party going.

The record is available via Doom Trip Records digitally and on Cassette (Limit to 100 copies).

ILLUMINATION, by HOLOBEAMS

a3523563621_10

Presented by the illustrious Illuminated Paths crew is this phenomenal collection of tracks from Holobeams, ILLUMINATION!

Beautifully melodic and upbeat – ILLUMINATION soars through 10 tracks in an amazing swirl of synthesized atmosphere. The bubbling energy is bursting at the seams – with satisfying beats leading the way. Deeply satisfying progressions as well, inspiring feelings of comfort and nostalgia. IP recommends you listen on a Tape, and I think they might be right!

New Cascadia, by Transpacifica

Sultry synthwave with some massive melodies – North Ireland producer Transpacifica presents a new 5-track EP conceptualized around a fictional utopian commune in the not-so-distant future. Retro riffs grab your attention and blasting 80’s drums keep you pinned down for the duration! And ohh my, those riffs, they are both beautiful and bountiful – leaving tons of sonic tidbits lodged in my head. Highly recommended if you dig downtempo synthesizer jams and cinematic synthwave!

Atelier Elektro, by Ametrom

a1758081265_10.jpg

Thoughtful and melodic synthwave from Canadian producer Ametrom, Atelier Electro is an enjoyable electro-disco record overflowing with riffs and lush synth arps! The 10-tracks are peppered with just the right amount of vocals – leaving plenty of room for the instrumentals to breathe, while also giving the album some additional weight and emotion.

On the whole, it’s a very positive record – melodies tend to be uplifting in a cute and nostalgic way, with steady tempo beats driving the tracks forward. There are some retro vibes, especially with certain riffs and passages, Ametrom utilizes some interesting instruments and sounds throughout. You might hear a sudden groove with organs blasting, guitars plucking and beautiful vocals – you begin to feel like you’re listening to something straight out of the 60’s.

I was very impressed with the sounds on this one. Ametrom clearly has a firm grasp on his tools and knows how to craft an experience. If you’re a fan of cinematic sounds, synthwave or cyberpunk style, you should really enjoy this one. The songwriting is tight and the execution is satisfying.

a1972198745_10

…with my friends is the latest Full-Length project from producer Reversed Reference – released at the beginning of last month, this one has floated through my airwaves quite a few times. It’s a sprawling collection of ideas – where as the name suggests we find RR collaborating with quite a few fellow artists. The result is a smorgasbord of styles and sounds, flourishing with post-vapor flavor, all very lush and delicious.

Looks like there are still some tapes available at the time this is published, get your hands on one before they’re gone!

ブラックマジック (Black Magic), by Zer0 れい

a1562133148_10

Lush, expansive, mysteriously nostalgic – Zer0 れい‘s latest full length project BLACK MAGIC is all of these things and more.

Propelling forward into interesting sonic territory, Black Magic feels like taking a slew of concepts and throwing them in a haunted blender – producing some sort of thick coffee sludge that is heavenly and rich. Zer0 れい does a magnificent job swirling together influences from Vaporwave, Mallsoft, Industrial Techno and Dark Ambient – crafting something quite unique and energetic.

One thing I immediately appreciated about this record was the attention to flow between tracks. After spinning it down twice I was noticing how fluid everything felt – much more than just a collection of tracks, attention to the detail in track listing and connections between the pieces gives me some kinda bizarre satisfaction!

My personal favorite track has got to be Smokescreen – the raw stoner guitar riffing behind absolutely massive atmospheric pads, percussion swirling all around – creating such an amazing vibe! I have found myself in traffic with this riff in my head, swooping in to fill in the spaces of my mind.

The whole project has a darkness to it – but it’s almost nostalgic, leaving the listener removed to an extent – allowing appreciation without over-saturation. Sometimes a producer will attempt to force gloom and doom down the listeners throat – which is not always in tune with how I am feeling emotionally, leading to some sort if detachment – but Black Magic finds a way to ride the melancholy wave with just a suggestion of existential dread.

It’s always thrilling seeing a producer grow and expand – this being Zer0 れい‘s first vinyl release – and it is the perfect candidate for wax in my opinion. The concept of the long-playing album is alive and well, look no further! You can grab the digital or physical copies via BRC30 Productions Bandcamp page.

S P O R T : DELUXE, by TYLER HOLMES

a1132377179_10

Released back in August 2017 but just reaching my ears now (forgive me!) – I have become hypnotized and captivated by S P O R T : DELUXE by TYLER HOLMES. Available via Oakland imprint Ratskin Records, this 9-track project bleeds and oozes with expressive energy. Tyler is unafraid to truly explore the sonic territory around him, using an expansive palette of instruments, sounds and influences. There is a strange focus to everything, as if all the madness were arranged in a very particular way….

マジックタッチ, by ÉT♢ILΞS

a3555907447_10

Tomorrow Entertainment Records has been really hitting my sweet spot with their past few releases, and their most recent album of wonders is no exception! 10 tracks of lush vocal-heavy vaporwave with a fuzzy clarity. Tasty and thoughtful chopping and warping make this one an interesting listen, quite rewarding as the tracks wander onward….

I-95, by I-95 Exit-98- Santee, South Carolina USA

a3802831685_10

Dropped last November on Tomorrow Entertainment Records – 1-95 is an interesting little vapor study. It’s a fantastic project, dense with fuzzy vibes leaking through the speakers. Perfect soundtrack for a hazy road trip up the coast…

Really found myself getting lost in this one, and coming back to it again and again. Part of it is the artwork – I am forever attracted to top-down photography of landscapes, map-style you might say – even better when roads/highways are involved (for whatever reason) It obviously suits the release well, but it also has a unique aura, likely urged on by the color palette. Something about it just draws me in, again and again.
