Return of the Ocelot, by Vimana Aircraft

Fresh and raw boom-bap beats from the mastermind behind DaP Station Records – we are blessed with a nice new beat tape by Vimana Aircraft. What we are blessed with is 8-tracks of lushly lo-fi improvisations that are simply overflowing with energy. Oversaturated and distorted percussion and synths blur into a fuzzy and deliciously thick style. Satisfyingly rough and gritty, what more do you want from a lo-fi beat tape!

Hardly VA’s first project of this nature – I encourage you to poke around the DaP Station bandcamp for the rest of his catalog as well as a slew of other awesome lo-fi producers. The label has been in operation, staying true and DIY for 10 years now, so show some support!

Last Of Us LP, by Nu:Gravity

Fresh from UK Future Garage label The Games We Play is the Last Of Us LP by Nu:Gravity – 11 deep atmospheric tunes with plenty of throbbing bass and shuffling rhythms. Featuring a plethora of collaborative tracks, highlighting some of the label and scenes other talent – notably EWPVTH and Sloati make an appearance, lending to the sonic diversity of the release.

If you’re not familiar with the labels output, this is a wonderful place to start, with a name-your-own-price download available as well as streaming on Soundcloud.

Sedative EP, by Heavenchord

Brand new from Russian label project Secret Domain is a lovely EP from ambient-dub producer Heavenchord. I have become a big fan of Heavenchord this past year, I must say the alias truly suits the music, lush and heavenly tones and beautiful chordal arrangements are integral to the producers atmospheric and relaxing style. Leaning towards the ambient side of dub-techno, the featured players here are definitely the round pulsing synths and bubbly expansive pads. When percussion does enter the scene, it is far from overwhelming, imitating the rhythm of the current under a calm stream.

These 5 long-form tracks might as well be considered a full length album instead of an EP given the playing time. Regardless, the tracks are expansive and curious, full of places to explore. Healthy use of textural flourishes to accompany the ebb and flow of the synthesizers is a common theme, utilizing field recordings in quite a satisfying way.

Much as the title of the EP suggests, you may find yourself sedated by these tracks – track 2 I found especially hypnotic, turning my casual listening sessions to an introspective self-guided breathing meditation. Ultimately this is a great relaxing record, it embodies some of my favorite aspects of this kind of music – mellow enough to throw on in the background, but very rewarding when you take a closer more considerate listen.

If you hear something you like, be sure to check out Secret Domain – they have been curating a wonderful platform of atmospheric dub-techno music, with plenty more Heavenchord tunes to satisfy your craving for more…

NEU A MENORCA 1999, by VYLTER

Blissful plunderphonics and vapor wanderings from VYLTER brought to us by Tapewurm.fm. I’ve really been enjoying this labels output and this release is no exception – a tight and satisfying 4-track EP with tasty riffs and thick atmospheres. Any Change is a true jam, making the whole project worthy of repeat listens – and the track lengths are beefy enough to leave an impression without overstaying their welcome. Nice sounds for reflection or slow travel…

Perspectives, by Laffey

Lovely chill-hop beats for your mellow morning from producer Laffey. Brought to us by Inner Ocean Records – this 5 track EP smacks softly with delicious beats and intoxicating melodies. Some beautiful guitar and piano work here, lots of subtle treats to make you smile. Flow has got to be my favorite track for this reason – it’s got a perfect beat, peppered with sublime reversed guitar riffs, all sitting on top of the most mellow keys possible. Perfect listen for slow mornings or rainy nights…

Twilight Magnum, by Magenta Room

New from the family at Vivarium Recordings is a stellar new effort from Gareth Sloan (Halogen Star) via a new moniker Magenta Room. Lots going on in this record – holding steady to his past output, there are seriously infectious melodies and licks happening. There is also an overarching mellowness to the record – a sense of comfort and ease – making the album an almost meditative and healing experience.

Tracks like Northern Skies are simply lush beyond imagination – with big retro vibes harkening back to the best offerings from Windham Hill to touches of Eno and Emerald Web. Supremely satisfying and easy to listen to while also being rewarding to investigate deeper. If you find yourself digging it, definitely check out Gareth’s efforts under his Halogen Star moniker – a different shade of Magenta….

Gothic Tech [ RE-ViSiONED], by ASVMR

Originally released last year via Vivarium Recordings and written between 2017-2018 – Gothic Tech sees a rebirth in the form of a remastered edition on Holloway Tapes. Its lush cyberpunk dystopia sounds – thick with textural and atmospheric experimentation. The project carries a slightly dark tone – slightly lost with the reinterpretation of the artwork in my opinion, though it is a aesthetically pleasing design – the sound holds true to the Gothic namesake. Huge chambers serve as worshiping centers to the code of the rhythm and bass.

Happy to see this one get a re-release. Same as it ever was, but a little bit of polish on the exterior. Definitely worth visiting again if you’re familiar, and a perfect opportunity to dive into ASVMR‘s catalog…

Buzzy Linhart Loves You

On February 13th, 2020, the music died. Buzzy Linhart, aged 76 passed away. He was a beautiful genius. A guiding light of love in an otherwise undeserving world. This isn’t an obituary in the slightest, I’ll leave that to the professionals. I more so wanted to write about my experience listening to his music, which means a lot to me. For the uninformed there are plenty of things that can trace you back to Buzzy. His most famous song is all about the people you care the most about “Friends”. Bette Midler did a version of this track on her debut “The Divine Miss M”. Even Donkey from Shrek sings it when meeting his new best buddy. Carly Simon has a version of my personal favorite “The Loves Still Growing” on her debut album as well. Buzzy’s played with Jimi Hendrix and is even beloved by Howard Stern. His first release was with his band Seventh Sons on legendary psych label ESP. You may know them for releasing the new Painted Faces LP.

I first heard Buzzy Linhart after purchasing “Pussycats Can Go Far” at my local record store. I bought it for the Alice in Wonderland style artwork and goofy looking character pictured on the back. That goofball turned out to be a musician who would forever change my outlook on creating music. From the moment I heard “Shoo That Fly” I knew I’d be going back to Positively Records and buying every Buzzy Linhart album they had. I’m proud to own every LP he’s released. Buzzy told us all “The Time to Live is Now” and you’re god damn right I listened. Buzzy Linhart is Music. He’s a love for creativity personified.

Through sampling his work, I was lucky enough to meet his son Xeno who found me on SoundCloud. Xeno told me about how Pussycats Can Go Far was written about him. I learned that Buzzy was the real deal. He practiced what he preached in his songs. I told him that I put Buzzy right up there with my musical hero Frank Zappa. Buzzy wrote about heaven, he wrote about love, he was a poet in the least pretentious way. We should all be like Buzzy and enjoy the madness.

Anyways listen to some Buzzy Linhart today because the loves still growing, and always will. Buzzy Linhart loves you.
