SLIME?COMP. by Vacuum Noise Records

a2850338947_10

Dropped like a bowl of pudding at the fridge in the middle of the night – SLIME?COMP is the latest compilation construction from Vacuum Noise Records (masterminds behind ANYWAVE and much more). Mystery and anticipation swirled around this project for weeks, from the bizarre call for SLIMEPUNK submissions that raised eyebrows, to the shift towards slimeWAVE which raised more than eyebrows! Er, anyways I am probably a bit biased towards these compilations as I have contributed to both, but I really enjoy them both thoroughly. The sounds themselves are quite experimental of course, with such a nebulous slimy criteria who could expect anything else – resulting in a really interesting tracklist this time around – and a satisfying one at that.

Some personal favorites include tracks by doctorb, V ▲ P Y D, b l u e s c r e e n and Reversed Reference, but there is a plethora of jams here to enjoy. Oh and you’d already have this album in your library by now if you subscribed to VNR4LYF

“”“”毛粥”“”” by 李嘉翎

a2333313003_10

Meandering sonic oddities from 李嘉翎 (puramu) presented by the forward thinking Engram Recordings. This one is packed with some dense and interesting energy – lush drones and bold audio plundering build the atmosphere. Rough and fuzzy, but also quite juicy – maybe it is a new kind of stonefruit?! It’s certainly delicious, and left me wanting more – with the spontaneous tracks never breaching 3 minutes in length. It’s punk-found-sound and I dig it to the max!

Purple e.p. by Pansori/TABQURIA

a0578321386_10

XO Archives (Japan) presents us with this lovely split-EP from Pansori and TABQURIA. Each producer providing around 10 minutes of delicious harsh sounds – buzzing and throbbing all over the sonic landscape with energy and excitement. Thick and satisfying distortion takes center stage in this one as the two go head to head, trading riffs and samples back and forth in a noisy dance of fate!!

The Pink e.p. has already arrived as well….

Four Months, by M L D V R

a0101067651_10

Self-released dark experimental from Sydney based noise producer M L D V R. Stumbled on this one randomly, drawn in by the cover art (no pun intended) – and pleasantly surprised with what I found inside. 3 expansive tracks of rough and satisfying experimentation, folding together dissonance and rhythm in the most addicting way that has left me coming back for more and more. The evolution of tracks is potent, with the first track being ominously deconstructed, leading towards the 3rd track which hits a massive halftime/dubstep beat that packs an intensely subtle energy.

Apparently this is part 1 of 3 in a new series from this producer, I am very excited for what’s to come. Don’t be fooled by the artwork formatting, it would appear this is a digital only release so far. Perhaps we will be blessed when the series is completed with some sort of Tape release….

S P O R T : DELUXE, by TYLER HOLMES

a1132377179_10

Released back in August 2017 but just reaching my ears now (forgive me!) – I have become hypnotized and captivated by S P O R T : DELUXE by TYLER HOLMES. Available via Oakland imprint Ratskin Records, this 9-track project bleeds and oozes with expressive energy. Tyler is unafraid to truly explore the sonic territory around him, using an expansive palette of instruments, sounds and influences. There is a strange focus to everything, as if all the madness were arranged in a very particular way….

FRESH BATCH – June 10th 2019

ET_FreshBatch_June10_2019

Hello music lovers! It’s time for another FRESH BATCH of awesome underground music!

This week has proven to be ULTRA underground – with quite a few records and projects being “Self Released”. Seeing this trend got me thinking to myself – what really is the purpose of a record label these days? Certainly the role has changed in the past years and decades, leading many independent producers to push releases without any sort of Label backing. The self-release of projects is DIY to the core – and even if there isn’t a stated label presence, many of these releases are propelled forward by word of mouth and pure sonic interest.

So what does all this mean? What is the takeaway!? NOTHIN! Just a bunch of great music, so strap in and listen up folks, there’s gold in them-there hills!

Indigenous Mix 2, by SAD MAN

a3061976218_10

After seriously enjoying SAD MANs release last month – UNTITLED ALBUM – I was very much looking forward to this smaller drop that was scheduled on his bandcamp to release June 3rd. What we’ve received is a beautiful 9-track “remix” project in which SAD MAN dives back into some select songs from his latest LP, revisiting the themes to provide entirely new interpretations!

As with his previous release, the songs dwell in the realm of true sonic exploration – where I felt his work was of a deconstructed nature, the vibe is even more potent on this latest project. The sounds more than ever appear to have been sliced out of the air, jumbled around on the floor, and crafted back together into some kind of mosaic masterpiece.

Lots of very satisfying sounds in here as well. I have found myself being lulled into a state of trust and relaxation, with wooden percussion rolling around me and buzzing squelching synths flying past my ears. This time around the Jazz vibes are bigger too – especially with tracks like “Ceep” which features some tender piano noodlings, or “Dog” which feels like an experimental open jazz session led by a slick pocket drummer on the kit.

Another highly recommended listen – digital edition is currently available for download via the artists Bandcamp page and is Pay what you Want! So don’t wait and grab yours today…

Untitled Album, by Sad Man

a0883135841_10

Experimental Electronic + Jazz musician SAD MAN presents us with an epic new release UNTITLED ALBUM, which dropped back at the beginning of May. This beefy 21 track epic is a true experiment in abstract electronics, with a heavy lean towards resonant glitches and deconstructed club sounds.

At times UNTITLED ALBUM steers into quite adventurous territories, adopting flavors from world music, IDM, glitch hop and more to create his own unique electronic flavor. The songs themselves are hearty meals, rarely dipping below 3 minutes in length, leaving plenty of time to explore sonic ideas and freely wander the landscape of sound.

SAD MAN music seems to lean heavily towards dissonant experimentation, with rhythms propelling the vibe forward at a steady tempo. Though the sounds used may not be stranger to club atmosphere, it is the way all the sounds are broken down – stripped to their essence, and repurposed in a way to tell an entirely different story. Grooves appear as quickly as they disappear – percussion being somewhat nebulous, sometimes held by some boom bap drums, other times being completely phased into crushed synths and chopped waveforms. A track can fly from footwork madness to lofi house vibes in a matter of moments, and yet it all works quite well, with SAD MAN never losing footing within each track.

On the whole, UNTITLED ALBUM is a damn good work of art. It’s a rewarding listen, the kind you enjoy time and time again, with and without headphones – at home, in the car, etc. Take it with you in life and see how it morphs the landscape around you – a premium vibe augmentation.

Really strong recommendation on this one – the best word I can use to describe the complete project is Therapeutic. Something about the nature of the sounds, the mystery of where each track leads, it all put me very much at ease. Even the sounds themselves – I often found myself feeling quite entranced, as if my mind was being massaged through the airwaves. Perhaps you will have the same experience, and I encourage you to give it a shot!

The album is available to stream and download via the artists Bandcamp page – as well as a Compact Disc edition (which I will likely pick up in the near future!). SAD MAN has a healthy discography on his bandcamp page too, and with a remix-album set to release tomorrow, anyone who enjoys ought to be excited…

Merge, by Blumt

a2085532750_10

This small project was sent my way a few months ago – a 3 track EP of harsh noise from German producer Blumt. A beautifully dark debut, self released via the artists bandcamp page. Blumt uses a palette of deep ambience and shattering dissonance to paint his work – making a fitting soundtrack for an old horror film. The project finishes massively with what I consider to be a pretty damn amazing track, “Circle Bit” – pure energy packed IDM that leaves you wanting more.

I will be eagerly waiting to hear more from this producer – with Merge dropping back in January, maybe we will get lucky before the years end…
